A Sustainable Future

We’re as passionate about our corporate responsibility and environmental ethics as we are proud to deliver the highest levels of commercial waste recycling in the UK. We’re at the forefront of developing commercially viable and innovative waste management solutions. And with ever-changing government legislation, we constantly seek ways to meet challenges and move towards our zero-landfill goal and a sustainable future.

How commercial waste going to landfill destroys the environment

Each year, millions and millions of tonnes of waste are placed into landfills – both household and commercial waste. These huge amounts have a devastating effect on the planet.

Toxins

A lot of household and commercial waste contains toxic substances, which, over time, leak into soil and groundwater, causing environmental hazards for years. Electronic waste contains vast amounts of hazardous substances, like mercury, arsenic, solvents, acids and lead.

Leachate

When waste breaks down in landfill, and water filters through, the liquid formed is leachate. This is a highly toxic liquid that can pollute the land, ground water and waterways.

Greenhouse gases

Any green waste put into landfill is compacted down and covered, which removes the oxygen, causing it to break down in an anaerobic process. This eventually releases methane – a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. It’s also a flammable gas and highly dangerous if allowed to become too concentrated. The global warming and climate change implications are colossal.
